A lot of exciting projects this fall! I have been teaching myself programming, mostly with Python, and made some good progress—although there is still a long way to go! I am also getting more acquainted with the existing computer environments for sound design and composition (Csound, Super Collider, Pure Data, LillyPond/Frescobaldi, Open Music, AthenaCL, Music21). Needless to say, I have been spending a good part of my free time on the computer!
Not entirely unrelated, I have also been working with Dr. Faustus on our next project for the 2015 season: a concert for solo instruments and digital media (date TBA, most likely early June 2015). We are still at the preliminary stage, but it looks like it will be an interesting event, with a fantastic lineup of composers and performers. I will be writing a piece for this concert, most likely for piano and electronics. My initial idea is to write the piece as a concerto for piano and fixed media, using a Csound orchestra. But that might change—and, most likely, it will!
I am also revising my violin/piano piece, la vie dans les plis, for viola and piano; making a bunch of short electronic studies, some of which might lead to more developed pieces (or not!); and toying again with the idea of undertaking a large orchestral piece, which can be both a very exciting endeavor, and a frustrating experience when it comes to obtaining a decent performance. Time will tell.
This is it, in a nutshell, for my musical activity of the fall. Thank you for reading, and come back soon for more updates and performance announcements!
